A “World” View

I found the picture above from a very interesting website discussing the Biblical World view and you can visit the website here --> http://www.notbychance.net/biblical-worldview.php

Thoughts .

I find myself lost within them more often than I would like to be. It’s the one place where I can shape reality into whatever I wished it would be: what I want it to be. Situations, characters, places and events all sculpted and shaped to form a temporary Utopia. My Utopia of course changes constantly with my mood and the situations I find myself in daily. So my world would drastically change every…hour? A very unstable world I would say hehe. I find my balance between reality and this escape world, held together by writing out this other world. Writing allows me to recreate this second “reality” onto “paper” (digital paper on Word counts as paper yes?) and indeed shape it as I wish, however, that is not reality. The question comes still…is my own reality better than actual reality or is my life that bad that I would rather live in that other world? Not at all, but hey, having the ability to teleport to work sure could save me alot of money and time…and it would be fun too can you imagine! Ahem…so what is the purpose of this post. Well its foundation is the term World View. Each of my other “realities” that I create have multiple world views, based off on what exactly is happening in the world. So if the world I am creating has super human beings, how is their view of the world shaped and how is mine and how is the rest of the world’s view shaped.

So what is a World View?

world·view  (wûrldvy)

1. The overall perspective from which one sees and interprets the world.
2. A collection of beliefs about life and the universe held by an individual or a group
.
~What then is a “worldview”? Francis Schaeffer described a man’s worldview as “the grid through which he sees the world.” Much like wearing a pair of glasses, depending on the lens, the world around you may seem larger, smaller, tinted or even obscured. A worldview is like that…
…Everyone has a worldview. Everyone has basic assumptions by which they interpret the world around them. Everyone makes decisions (whether they know it or not) motivated by how they think of reality. We make decisions based on our view of God (and whether there is one), on our assumptions about truth, knowledge and ethics. We could put it this way, belief determines behaviour; and conversely, one’s behaviour reveals ones beliefs.  ~ Pastor Doug van Meter
.
Living with a constant knowledge that there is God who is an all consuming fire, who hates sin for He is holy and will judge those who sin, will change how you live your life in contrast to living life without any knowledge of God and/or His hatred of sin and judgement on those who sin. Another example is how we view government, police, celebrities, parents even ourselves.
.
Government
.
That’s one of the big ones isn’t it? Not even going into the politics or the appointed leaders but the type of Government it is. Would you choose a government that was democratic, socialist, capitalist, communist… a dictatorship? Why would you choose that specific government. Would you choose a government at all? Why? That question why, when answered truthfully, will reveal much about our ideas and beliefs or as the definition reads, our overall perspective from which we see and interpret the world or in this case, the government. Romans 13 tells us that God expects us to be in subject to governing authorities for there is no authority except from God – Romans 13:1-2 “Every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God. Therefore whoever resists authority has opposed the ordinance of God; and they who have opposed will receive condemnation upon themselves.” Therefore will we look at government from the world’s perspective or from a biblical perspective?
.
Writing
.
How does my world view affect my writing? Well for one thing, I am not writing dark gothic stuff anymore (praise the Lord for that indeed!) and that is because my world view has changed dramatically over the last year. How I view the world and it’s inhabitants (including myself) shapes how I make my characters, the environment they live in, the government in whose authority they are under and how they react or are affected by these different elements. Also I ask the question, is the world I am creating a replica of the world we are currently living in or my own version of the world. Each one would influence the characters and their world view and also influence the readers view and how they relate to the characters and the world I create for that specific story which makes writing all the more fun!
.
As a final thought I would like to say that I do pray that our worldview conforms to God’s will as Pastor Doug said,
~You see, when God calls us to worship He is calling us to a completely new worldview, in which everything in life is to be undertaken with a view to His Lordship. God’s call to worship is a call for us to establish new categories of thinking and thus it is a call to a new way of living. We call this a “worldview.” And to the degree that our worldview is informed by the categories of Scripture, to such a degree all of our life will be lived as worship (a bowing to the will of God).~
 .
Romans 12:1 – Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship.

Thanks to Pastor Doug van Meter from Brackenhurst Baptist Church for His insight on this topic as he preached on Leviticus 1:1.
