Fear and Fervor – A Patreon Fiction

Today’s fiction is an excerpt from this month’s Patreon work. I’ve combined my two favourite genre’s – Romance and Horror – with a dash of Lovecraftian influence. Enjoy!

Up upon the attic’s bare wooden floors, in the bodega of Casa Del Potro, between discarded paint bottles and torn canvas. Therein lies the young male we know only as Eduardo. He sits with his back against the raised mattress, naked save for a pair of dirty boxers. They reveal the stringy black threads of hair covering his legs and arms and have begun to crawl past the navel to his chest. Smudges of paint cover some of his brown skin, and the whites of his hands are lost to a swirling grey rainbow of colour.

He sleeps deeply and soundly. The dark tendrils of oily curled hair tumbled down to his chin like a frayed curtain. Near his bare feet lies a canvas still heavy with wet paint. Each corner holds a random item that keeps the canvas from rolling in. An iron stands in one corner, the severed cord wrapped in dark tape. In another corner is the one half of Eduardo’s wearable Jordan’s, the bottom half yawning with yellow strands of loosening superglue. The foot of an aged table, and one of the three metal stools keep the remaining corners down.

Caressed over canvas is a visage of improbable beauty. Flaxen tresses that divulge in hues of orange and red cascading down the back. Golden braids coil the hem of the snowy dress that sits below the smooth skin of bare shoulders. An elegant face gazes out at the viewer with gleaming emerald orbs that reach into the soul and tug it to the surface. Pert upturned nose sits perfectly on the symmetrical face above thin pursed lips. There is a haunting glare accentuated by her slightly raised brow, as though she notices something behind the viewer. Perhaps she feels the tiny pinpricks of an insect crawling up her leg below the separation of canvas and real life.

Or perhaps her gaze from canvas onto reality bears a truth she wishes not to comprehend. The artist, a living soul, tethered to the encroaching darkness ignorantly rejected as merely death. Only she, the portrait, the art, the creation, has any semblance of what awaits beyond the veil.

There is more to this corporeal existence than we can see. More beyond the ethereal presence that on occasion slinks along our spine with icy tendrils.

I will tell you the story of Eduardo and his paintings for it is a story that must be told. Perhaps it shall restore the madness that rattles my bones like arthritis.

Pray the madness does not pass on to you, for there is no fetter back to this blessed ignorance.

Friday Fiction: Wattpad Excerpt

As you might know (some of you definitely know), Friday’s are usually Microcosmsfic days, where 3 elements are spun and a bunch of us write a 300 word flash fiction using those elements. The prize is prestige and an opportunity to judge the next round. Last Friday I wrote a Fable called The Man and the Mice and to both my surprise, and glee, I actually won that week’s Microcosmsfic, both picked by the Judge and the Community. *Swoons*

So I wont be entering this Friday as I will be judging the entries. You can, however, enter the comp here: MicrocosmsFic.com Write great stories!

I actually loved writing that fable, and you can read the whole process of how I came up with the story, on my Patreon page (free) here: Inspiration Behind The Man and the Mice

Fridays are also days when I post a chapter of my novella, Innocence, on Wattpad. The premise follows four police officers and a young doctor, who illegally execute a known killer. Now someone (or something) is stalking them.

Here’s an excerpt from the next chapter. Innocence – A Wattpad Novella

The room spins as body leans forward to reach for the fallen injection. The body slumps onto the warm wooden floor with a soft thwack. Eyes glaze over the irregular lines that mark each thin, individual piece of floorboard.

The rows of polished plank begin to sway.

Bend.

Lurch.

They curl upward from the ground and wiggle free from their confines. Oversized gunk drips wet, grey splotches over the curling floorboards, coating them in their mucous membrane and form egg-shaped heads. The droplets slither over the wood, every drip causing the planks to writhe to life. The curled heads wiggle upwards like cat-sized maggots, squirming as the slime devours the wooden meat sack that was once the floor. Together, in rapid gyration they turn to the body on the floor in a unison of tiny beady eyes. Black as coal. Tufts of slick hair drape over the left side of their bulging heads. The gunk continues to drip over their tiny humanoid faces.

The giggles contract into hicks of breathless inhalations, gurgling with saliva dripping down the gawking mouth, then rising into a crescendo of strangled chortles winding into wild screeching.

The maggots skitter as though the sound invigorates them. They skid forward from their coiled perch in frenzied slurping shuffles. They climb over the body in a mesh of wriggling appendages.

December Patreon: Dominae Mortem

skull-570975_1280

Upon death’s head I rode.

Splinters thick as fingers dug into tiny palms as the obsidian oar cut water like knife through skin. Ripples poured about the fractured bone where I stood within an abyssal socket, breaking the murky glass surface reflecting the ashen gloom above. Night approached quickly, yet no sun faded into the dismal horizon ahead. The sky remained sombre. Death seemed to beckon across the solemn expanse. Only it was his scythe between my hands reaping waters to propel me forward.

Death was dead. I was the victor.

Weak arms continued to heave, pain a welcome guest keeping sanity afloat. Failing legs trembled yet remained upright below the frock that had once ruffled about my ankles, now frayed strips caked in mud and dried blood. A princess no more.

Liberated from sin’s shackles.

Emancipated from righteousness.

I had become what I feared most. I had become death.

This month’s Patreon is dedicated to Lady Death, or as I have to call her – due to copyright (and confusion) with a comic book character of the same name – Dominae Mortem.

Who is she? What is she? Where is she going? Where does she come from? How did she defeat death?

December Goals: No Jingle Bells Here

5-things

It’s the 1st of December and I don’t need to go further than my emails to know that everyone is getting hyped up for Christmas and December holidays. Not me.

I’ll be busy working towards 2017 during December, and there is a lot to work through.

Anthology

I have announced before that I am working on a short story anthology. Two in fact, one of my own personal stories and another from Patreon suggested short stories. My dear friend and amazing artist Leesan Naidoo, has been designing the covers for each of my short stories, and I must say they look amazing. I look forward to publishing my anthology. Obviously it involves a lot of work, but that’s to be expected.

I’ve also changed a couple of things on my Patreon page and will be starting that up again. If you have any suggestions for a December short story, feel free to send suggestions in the comment section below.

Patreon – Nthato Morakabi

Book Reviews

I’ll be continuing my book reviews as usual. A lot of the books I read, have been for Gamecca Magazine, and I’m not sure if I’m allowed to post those reviews on my blog too. Which is why my Wednesday Book Reviews have been a little slow. I’ve effectively been reading two books a week. According to Goodreads, I’m 6 books behind but by next week it should be down to 3 at the most.

Book Review requests are still coming in, and there’s an annual February event looming that I’ll be part of. So much reading, so little time.

If you want to know what I’m currently reading, here’s my Goodreads Reading List.

General HooHah

I’ll be guest blogging during December on a friend and fellow writer’s blog Life In Light of Eternity, with our focus on Christmas in our own little Advent Calendar. Different authors, varying formats and insightful stuff. Join us!

I’ll be revamping my website NthatoMorakabi.com. Design. Content. etc. I’ll also be starting up my monthly Newsletter with updates on everything happening. You can subscribe to the newsletter here.

In last week’s post, The Creative’s Burden, I listed a number of things I wished I could do and didn’t have time for. Rather than do the whole “2017 Resolutions” thing, I’ll be kick starting a couple of those ideas this month.

In short, I’ll hitting the ground running. I hope you will continue to endure with me through the last remaining days of this month and onward to 2017.

Happy Writing!

Spring Death Week 3 – Updates

plant-1304570_640

Sooooo it’s the third week and I have written 4 of my ten stories. Falling behind, I know, but worry not! 6 stories in 11 days is totally possible guys. Trust me.

Spring Death Week 3 theme – Surreal

In the first week I addressed Serial Killers. In the second week I took on Supernatural/Paranormals. This week we look at the surreal, or as it has been so perfectly worded: having the disorienting, hallucinatory quality of a dream.

This means I’ve got free roam not limited to anything really because it’s plausible in a surreal sense without needing it to be explained in intricate detail *breathes*. I’m expecting really bizarre stories to flow out of this one.

Patreon Final Story Poll

In the last week of September, I will be running a week long poll to decide which of the ten short stories will be given a spiffy looking cover. So please drop by Monday 26 September to begin voting. It’s open to the public too which means if your story vote wins, you will get a copy of that particular story. Shiny cover and all. *ooooh. aaaaah.

August Dark Fantasy Reward (*Patreons only)

My artist just finished the August rendition of my short story. You will be getting that reward at the end of this month. Keep an eye out for that, I think you’ll definitely love it!

Thank you so much for your support!

Darker Than Black

Silence pervades the hallowed sanctuary,

Downcast eyes stare from above,

Holy presence, divine love.

Thorns. Nails. Wooden burden.

Innocent Death – what a bargain.

Man on bent knee and clasped hands, unwary.

*

I grasp his neck, devotional beads against trachea,

“Forgive me father,” words spill

“But you have sinned.” the silence I fill

Choking gasps fluttering priestly robe

Thick fingers attempt to prick and probe

Long have I waited to instill this fear.

*

Head meets wooden pew with sickly crack.

Eyes roll back in their socket

I reach deep within my pocket

Zip locks for hands and feet

Head slips from the seat

I drag him off to a fate darker than black.

It’s horror month here at AScribe To Describe – This week is serial killers:

September Goals: Spring Death

mask-poppies-field-red

It is the official first week of September, which means Spring has sprung here in the sunny southern hemisphere. As my sinuses get clogged worse than the M1 highway with a broken-down tuck in the middle lane, I’ve dedicated this month (and Patreon) to lurid tales sure to make you squirm. No red roses and blue violets tilting towards the sun’s rays here.

Goals

The goal for the month is to write ten, 3000 word short stories (30 000 words), that’s two-and-a-half shorts a week (we’ll make it three). One of these shorts will receive a sparkling macabre cover and PDF version for your enjoyment. More exciting stuff swirling to the surface later on in the month.

Cutthroats

This first week is dedicated to Serial Killers. The who, what, when, why, how of it all, twisted into razor sharp tales twisting through your gut in the dead of night. I haven’t delved into true horror in a while so I can only wonder what will manifest.

Patreon

Patreons, feel free to send suggestions, ideas, and what-nots for your own personal creation. It doesn’t even have to be related to my Spring Death theme.

Non-patreons, you have an opportunity to own an exclusively written short story of your creation to show off from just $1. *wink wink, nudge nudge*

Submissions

I will be submitting most of these stories for publishing, while others will be set aside for my personal as well as my Patreon anthology. Fun times ahead. If you love horrors, you’re going to be in for a treat. I apologize in advance for my non-horror readers; please bear with me for the month.

August Short Story Invitation

Patreon-Invitation

It’s a new month, which means new short story suggestions and I’m sending this out to all peoples. Is there an idea or concept you’ve thought about and wanted to turn into a story? Or explore in a work of fiction? Regardless of genre (well okay I’m not going to write any 50 Shades of anything), of setting, timeline anything. Let me take a bash at it for you in the form of a short story.

This short story will feature in a Patron inspired anthology, and you can boast to your friends and family that it’s your idea come to life.

Of course all credit is given where credit is due and if you contribute a $1 or more, you get this Short Story as well as another Patreon only short story in PDF format, with a personal acknowledgement, behind the scenes drafts, insights, revisions etc. You can see the rest of the rewards too if you would like to contribute more.

I’ll be posting a preview of July’s short story, contributed by fellow Patron Carin Marais. Thanks again Carin!

Announcement!

franz-kafka-quotes-sayings-non-writing-writer-insanity

Hey all!

It’s August already (wow how time flies) and I’ve participated and won two Camp NaNos, which has put my word count for the year so far at around 65,000 words, and this excludes side projects and any writing I did between May and June. And in a couple more months it will be NaNoWrimo to add another 50,000 words. That’s a lot of writing. That’s a lot of words but… it’s not enough. I mean, look at the word counts for all those popular books that make us cool in the right circles:

Harry Potter: 1,084625

Lord of the Rings: 825,045

And check out this infographic: Famous Literature Words by Numbers

You might be thinking,”but Nthato, you don’t need 1 Million words to be a successful author” and I will tell you, you’re absolutely right. And then you might ask, “So why get bogged down by those massive word counts” and I will stare blankly at you and walk away because I don’t have an answer. Rude hey? I know, I’m a horrible person.

No, actually I get bogged down because I realized I can write a lot of (unedited, grammatically disturbing) words in a day. But where are they all going? To the Drafts folder. Hence this announcement today!

Short Story Anthologies

That’s right folks, you heard it here first! I’ll be looking to publish two separate collections of my short stories, never seen before in the public eye. The first will be a Patreon anthology with short stories requested by patrons. The second will be my own personal collection of written works including poetry and, of course, short stories.

Other things

Book Reviews

Nothing else has changed regarding all the other things I’m working on. Wednesday Book Reviews will still be going. Sometimes you gotta read when you’re not writing. If you’re an author with an upcoming book or a book already published, feel free to contact me for a review. You can use the form at the top.

Digital Art

I’m still working on my digital art for my July Camp NaNo work, which is a Fantasy story about… magic. Inspired by a series of things including Final Fantasy mage classes, JRPG awesomeness and storyline depths that would make anime watchers proud. Except, it’s African based. And I’m loving it.

What are your plans for the rest of the year?

Fantasy Horror writing – The Golden Man

Fantasy101

I wrote a story for Patreon. It sends shivers up my spine. I saw this story unfold before my eyes and with my imaginative mind you can imagine how this scene played out:

It was at that point that he wished Master Toburin had guided him through the fundamentals of turning invisible. As a fledgling Aziza, he was yet to gain the stamina needed to use forest magic, and his wings were nothing more than protruding bone on his bare back; but invisibility was an aptitude they could all accomplish young. Fighting the tumbling lithelillies in his belly, he slowly peered around the trunk.

A metal man stood between the trees staring off into the distance. Only, he couldn’t have been a man as his golden body flickered in the sun, much like the blades Pyre had seen the Aziza warriors use in their training. It was peculiar how the man was as still as a rock. A human looking head, dark as the Roobon trees back home, was seemingly stitched upon a golden neck. It sent a tingle up Pyre’s spine and he looked back to see if someone was behind him. Satisfied there was nothing, he turned around and came face to face with two lifeless eyes, wide and unseeing, yet boring into him with darkened pupils as red as the forest leaves.

His breath left him immediately.

And then the story proceeds towards a *shivers* interesting climax. Now this is all moving towards my short story The Last Robot on Earth and I’m playing around with a couple of genres. LRE TV presents… is a short story about a game of Man vs Machine, but you soon realize that the main character is not a man. Which I could explore into a deeper revelation of what it means to be human, and it would still remain a fun adventure reminiscent of Gamer or Hunger Games and like books/movies.

This particular story takes place in a Fantasy setting, hence the use of words such as lithelilles, which we would say butterflies, or Bloodshrub, which is a shrub with blood red leaves, and Roobon trees that are regular deciduous trees. You get more of a feel of it in the fuller short story but I think this excerpt is still pretty self explanatory.

What I’m also trying to tie in to this short story, is something I’ve always wanted to write but haven’t had the right idea to process; Dark Fantasy. In fact the draft name for this story was LRE Fantasy Horror (because I’m useless at titles) and I drew up a couple of starting points to guide the process. Honestly, I am quite happy with this final piece which I have unimaginatively titled The Golden Man.

If you would like to support my writing endeavour as a patron on Patreon, please click the link below. Rewards include a short story of your making, including the making of, sources, first drafts, revisions etc.

In my research, I found this fascinating open question interview with Clive Barker, who is the man behind The Books of Blood, Candyman, Hellraiser and plenty other – interesting – horrors. Funny enough he mentions that his book signings never had kids but I remember reading the Books of Blood volume 1 back in Grade 7 or 8. I was reading Stephen King at this time too. Yeah. I know. Don’t judge me.
