Writing Update: Of Metal and Magic + Beneath The Wax: Cover Reveal

It has been an enduring couple of months, and yet at the end of it all, writing continues to be both a savior and a form of catharsis that pulls me back from the murky depths. Well that, family, and good friends. Nonetheless, and despite my abhorrent absence, the writing cogs continue to go on. Much like life.

Of Metal and Magic

For the last few months I’ve been working alongside a couple of authors from Fiction Vortex, specifically in the realm of Of Metal and Magic (OMAM). JM Williams, an international author currently enjoying Comic Con Seoul, with much grace allowed me to be part of the team, and as an effort to bring more readers to this amazing universe, created the OMAM Facebook Page.

All things related to OMAM, including the authors, upcoming works, and announcements (photos of JM Williams enjoying Comic Con without us haha) can be found there. Please join us as we embark on a journey through an epic-shared universe of dragons and unicorns and magical stories.

Constantine’s nightmares drive him to undertake a journey to uncover a long-forgotten secret. Richard’s research uncovers a company secret and the mystery of Madame Bourgeois.

Dim Mirrors by Carin Marais

Dim Mirrors is a collection of 39 flash fiction stories that open windows into worlds of fantasy and nightmare. Interwoven with images from mythology and folklore are the themes of love, loss, and memory. The comical “Not According to Plan” leads to more serious and introspective works like “Blue Ribbons” and “The Destroyer of Worlds”, while mythology and folkloric elements come together in stories like “The Souls of Trees” and “Ariadne’s Freedom”.

Sketches by Nicolette Stephens

Like art sketches, flash fiction stories are fleeting moments captured in a few hundred words.

In a world without men, the first boy child is welcomed as the saviour of his race; a cuckoo clock holds death and destruction in its beautifully carved figures; and a snowman holds a silent vigil of peace during war.

In this collection of 50 stories, illustrated with her artwork, the author delves into worlds of imagination and reality inspired by words and drawings.

I apologize for the radio silence these last couple of months. Expect me to be very active and bringing lots of exciting new stories, book reviews, recommendations, and a couple of event articles too.

PS: I’m going to Comic Con Africa too. Expect pictures and geeking out haha.

After The End by Sharon Ruth Parkinson – Cover Reveal

After The End by Sharon Ruth Parkinson

There are few things that are considered in science-fiction as much as events which lead to the end of the world. After the End features ten short stories from author Sharon Ruth Parkinson which explore life in post-apocalyptic worlds.

In Mutation, mutated slaves are willing to do anything to save their race. As technology replaces humanity, the Technophobes are born.  When the universe gets Sucked In, a young couple discover the meaning of love.

From Earth, through space, time and even reality, humanity and the loss of it will answer the question, “What happens after the end?”

I have the privilege of personally knowing Sharon and she is an amazing author. Sharon was one of the authors contributing to Jozi Flash which you can download for free. She has now compiled her own collection of short stories for release January 2017.

About Sharon Ruth Parkinson

sharon-parkinson

I once read a book… It was called “Triplanetary” by EE “Doc” Smith and from that day on I was completely hooked on Sci-Fi. I was about ten, and my imagination had been fired and I began putting those imaginings into words. My grandparents fostered my love of words by collecting all their envelopes (way before e-mail was a reality), and giving them to me to open up and use as scrap paper when I stayed with them during summer holidays. A passion was born.

It wasn’t until I was in my forties and self-publishing became a reality that I decided to publish, starting with my anthology Possibilities on Lulu.com in 2006, and then my NaNoWriMo entrant, CODDS  was later published (I have since pulled CODDS since it needs some serious editing).

My main love is still Sci-Fi Fantasy, but I have discovered a delicious addiction to flash fiction, thanks to the Jozi writers and our WhatsApp group. My other passion is NaNoWriMo, which I attempt every year, not always succeeding, but enjoying the challenge it offers. And I have done all this while raising four children! I am busy with several novels, short stories and series at the moment, so like my Facebook page for updates

Mother Always Said – Update

Mother Always Said book cover idea

For the month of September I will be writing ten 3000 word short stories for my Spring Death theme. That is about 2.5 stories a week. I wrote my first short story yesterday – Mother Always Said.

It is a tale of a religious mother who endures hardships at home with an abusive husband, and at church with a questionable congregation. Her son becomes part and parcel of her deterioration, and sets the stage for the rest of his life.

So the above image is the first rough cover draft, first idea that came to mind which I quickly put together before it escaped me. Carin Marais, a friend, writer and fellow Patreon, also sent through an amazing suggestion using the following image:

MotherAlwaysSaid_02

If you have any ideas, suggestions, comments, links or anything helpful, please let me know. If I use your idea, you will get recognition, as well as a PDF version of the final cover and short story (a reward usually reserved for Patreons). Thank you in advance! You can use the contact form if your idea is complex – I’m on my emails almost all the time (except weekends.)

Earlier today I wrote a poem “Darker than Black” inspired by this tale, exploring the boy who is now a man. If you haven’t read it, please give it a look see. 🙂
