Now isn’t that something we all seem to struggle with? Discipline. Procrastination. Lack of motivation or whatever other reason you give yourself to not sit down and write. In all honesty, it is much easier to distract yourself with everything else (incl chores!) than to dedicate time and effort into doing something productive.
I found that writing for Gamecca Magazine has improved my sense of procrastination. The idea that there is a magazine that needs to be published and there is space set aside for my particular article, which will become a major drawback to everyone if I do not hand it in on time… the implications outweigh the laziness.
However, writing that one blog post or that short story because you want to has less implications than an expected publishing deadline and therefore a bit easier to talk yourself out of it. As Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn once said, “It is in the nature of the human being to seek a justification for his actions.”
I found this great comic about procrastination below; which one are you?
Great comic. I’m the sidetracker. 😉
Haha I hear you.
I am a couple of them, The Gamer, The Snacker The Watcher and at times, the Sidetracker too.
Cursed procrastination.
Those comics accurately describe my life. I never seem to kick it into gear until there’s a deadline close in… And then I wish for more time.
Ah deadlines. What would we be without them? Nothing like submitting at 00:00, vowing to never do it again and finding yourself in that very same boat a month later.
I was better this year. I actually started a 20 page research paper two weeks before it was due. (Didn’t finish it until about 3 hours before the deadline though…)
Haha wow! So what is your secret? How did you improve?
Well, I had to stay at school for Thanksgiving break. Being alone makes you do crazy things.
haha!
The list maker and the gamer. Though I’ve been doing better lately. I’ve been using video games as a reward if I get my writing done, lol.
That is actually brilliant motivation, to use your distraction as a reward. I think I will have to implement that into my own writing.
It works. Sometimes, lol.
